History and Leadership

The Lannan Foundation was founded in 1960 by “liberal thinker,” self-educated scholar, and modern American and European art collector and procurer Patrick Lannan, Sr. After Lannan’s death in 1983, the foundation received an endowment from his estate. In 1986, the Foundation moved from Lake Worth, Florida, to Los Angeles, California. 4

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Foundation expanded its programming and art collection. In 1994, the Lannan Foundation established the Indigenous Communities Program to support rural Native American communities. In 1997, the Foundation moved again, from Los Angeles to Santa Fe, New Mexico, 4 and received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service. 5

Activities and Funding

The Lannan Foundation is a left-of-center family foundation dedicated to what it considers “cultural freedom, diversity, and creativity.” The foundation mainly supports contemporary artists and writers and Native American activists in rural Native American communities. Its support primarily comes through grants to nonprofit organizations on topics of contemporary visual art, literature, and what it considers cultural freedom. 1

In 1989, the Lannan Foundation established the Lannan Literary Awards and Fellowships program. The organization has established Cultural Freedom grants to support the far-left concepts of social justice, education justice, prison reform and abolition, environmental justice, social justice, economic justice, and other left-of-center topics. 2 3

The Foundation also runs a literary grant program; a residency fellowship program for writers, translators, essayists, Native American activists, and left-of-center social justice activists; 8 and an Indigenous Communities program. 9 10

Previously, the Foundation ran the Lannan Residency Program in Marfa, Texas, which funded more than 360 fellows for two decades. 11
