Kerfuffle Foundation is a grantmaking organization located in Covington, Kentucky. 1 It is organized as a donor-advised fund within the Fidelity Investments Charitable Gift Fund. 2 The foundation primarily makes grants on journalism, education, youth-focused, and medical topics. 3 4 5
In 2021, Kerfuffle Foundation contributed $1 million to the University of San Francisco (USF) School of Education to build critical race theory-inspired programming and increase existing scholarship amounts. 6 7 Kerfuffle Foundation’s grant for the critical race theory-influenced concepts of equity and social justice enabled USF to develop a concentration in racial justice in education at the doctoral level and launch the school of education’s new Center for Humanizing Education and Research that made USF a “standard-bearer in the advancement of educational justice” during the COVID-19 pandemic. 8
Kerfuffle Foundation has also financially supported the left-of-center media organization CalMatters. 9 In 2019, Kerfuffle Foundation was one of the “leading supporters” of investigative journalist organization ProPublica. 10
Equity Grantmaking
Kerfuffle Foundation has made grants to various left-of-center causes. Other programs at USF associated with the grant included the school of education’s “strategic prioritizing process,” professional development, support for faculty and staff, and a re-envisioning of partnerships with San Francisco Bay Area schools and communities. USF claims the efforts resulting from the grant have brought national attention to the school of education and have raised the school’s profile as a “standard-bearer in the advancement of educational justice” during the COVID-19 pandemic. 14
Left-of-Center Media Grantmaking
In 2021, Kerfuffle Foundation also financially supported left-of-center media organization CalMatters. 15 16 Kerfuffle Foundation also financially supported the Greater Lowell Community Foundation in 2020. 17

Other Grantmaking
Kerfuffle Foundation has also supported nonprofit Crisis Action, 19 20 Boys and Girls Club of Puerto Rico, 21 the Exploratorium Science Museum, 22 the Lighthouse Writers Workshop, 23 Baltimore Urban Leadership Foundation’s The Door program, 24 the Cal Performances Program at the University of California, Berkeley, 25 and other educational and youth-focused organizations. 26 27
In 2020, Kerfuffle Foundation contributed $500,000 to Impact Society. 28 The foundation also contributed $500,000 to Impact Society in 2019 29 and $325,000 to Impact Society in 2017. 30
Kerfuffle Foundation has also made donations to the National Institute of Health (NIH) for the Center for Biotechnology 31 and for research on RNA sequencing 32 and has supported the National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy. 33
