Kaiser Health News is a national newsroom that produces journalism about health issues and was launched in 2009. 1 It is part of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, also referred to as the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Kaiser Health News formed journalism partnerships with the left-of-center fact-checker PolitiFact2 and also the left-leaning Guardian. 3

The Kaiser Family Foundation added former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to its board in 2016. 4 Sebelius served under President Barack Obama and oversaw the implementation of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. 5

People and entities associated with The Kaiser Family Foundation made $163,324 in political donations in federal elections from 1992 to 2020, of which $4,310 went to Republicans, according to the Center for Responsive Politics’ OpenSecrets.org. 6

Background

The Kaiser Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that spent $16 million on its news division in 2019. 7 Kaiser Health News was a 2019 Pulitzer Prize finalist in the investigative reporting category for a series of stories about how the University of Virginia Health System was suing low-income patients, confiscating paychecks and claiming houses. 8

Left-leaning Reporting Partnerships

Poynter/PolitiFact

Kaiser Health News announced in 2019 that it was partnering with the Poynter Institute for Media Studies’ left-of-center fact-checker PolitiFact to review the accuracy of claims made in health care coverage. 9 The partnership was for two years and PolitiFact stated its staffers would train and work with the Kaiser Health News staff and use the PolitiFact methodology for fact-checking. 10

The partnership is funded in part by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies as well as Google and Facebook. 11

The Florida Times-Union reported that PolitiFact “has been assailed as a partisan member of the liberal media.” 12

Smart Politics, a political website maintained by Eric Ostermeier, a research fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs, found that PolitiFact rated Republican statements as false at three times the rate of Democrats. 13

Smart Politics reviewed more than 500 stories from PolitiFact from January 2010 to January 2011. 14 The analysis found PolitiFact rated 98 statements as false or pants-on-fire in that 13-month period, with 74 assigned to Republicans and 22 to Democrats. 15

The Center for Media and Public Affairs at George Mason University produced a 2013 study that found PolitiFact rated Republican statements as false three times as often as those made by Democrats during President Obama’s second term. 16

The Guardian

Kaiser Health News also joined with the left-leaning Guardian for a project that tracked the health-care workers in the U.S. who died from COVID-19. 17

The Guardian released classified information given to it in 2013 by former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden that allegedly gave details on surveillance operations by the NSA. 18

The Guardian published a column in 2004 that appeared to call for the assassination of U.S. President George W. Bush. The newspaper later retracted the column. 19
