Just Majority is a coalition of left-wing nonprofits that support the expansion of the U.S. Supreme Court, which currently has a majority of conservative-leaning Republican-nominated justices, a practice critics call “court-packing.” In May and April 2023, Just Majority embarked on a bus tour in the northeastern United States and launched numerous rallies with attendees including U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and former Planned Parenthood Federation of America president Cecile Richards.

Policy Goals

Just Majority asserts that the U.S. Supreme Court is currently captured by right-wing judges purposefully steering the American legal system toward ideological ends. Its website describes “an unaccountable, unethical majority on the Supreme Court … behaving as if the rules don’t apply to them.” The organization criticizes the current justices for ending the purported federal right to abortion access by overturning Roe v. Wade, expanding gun rights, and supporting voter security laws. 1

Just Majority advocates that Congress expand the size of the U.S. Supreme Court, a practice critics call “court-packing.” Doing so would allegedly restore balance between the three branches of government by limiting the power of individual U.S. Supreme Court Justices. 2

At rallies, Just Majority members and supporters have also called for increased ethics scrutiny of U.S. Supreme Court Justices, especially after stories asserted that U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch had received financial benefits from conservative donors. 3 4
