Hamilton Family Charitable Trust

Overview

The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust originates from the philanthropy of Dorrance Hill Hamilton, the granddaughter of John T. Dorrance, who developed condensed soup and led the Campbell Soup Company. Hamilton supported a range of Philadelphia institutions in education, arts, and culture. In 1992, she, her husband Samuel M.V. Hamilton, and their children formed the Hamilton Family Foundation to address K-12 literacy in the Philadelphia region. ^{2  3  1}

Her estate created the Hamilton Family Charitable Trust in 2017 to sustain and broaden that effort. The Trust incorporated additional areas of family residence, including Palm Beach County, Florida, and Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island. Family contributions have driven significant asset growth. ^{1  2}

Grantmaking and Priorities

The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust makes grants to organizations that run K-12 educational programs. It prioritizes initiatives aimed at improving academic performance, especially reading and writing, along with workplace readiness and social-emotional skills. The Trust concentrates on under-resourced environments, typically schools with high percentages of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Its main geographic focus areas are the Greater Philadelphia region (the Philadelphia, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Camden counties); Palm Beach County, Florida; and Aquidneck Island, Rhode Island. ^{4  2}

Past grantees have included the John Bartram Association, Healthy NewsWorks, People’s Light, Chester County Futures, YoungMoms, the ESF Dream Camp Foundation, Save The Bay, the Newport Tree Conservancy, the Milagro Foundation, Habitat for Humanity of Palm Beach County, Urban Youth Impact, and The Reef Institute. The Trust uses a relationship-based grantmaking process. It does not fund capital projects, endowments, religious education, debt reduction, individuals, or political candidates, parties, or PACs. First-time grants are generally limited to program support up to $25,000, with grantees required to meet detailed eligibility and reporting standards. ^{4  2}

Leadership

As of 2024, Margaret H. Duprey was board chair of the Hamilton Family Charitable Trust. Nathaniel P. Hamilton and S. Matthews V. Hamilton Jr. were co-vice chairs, while Barbara R. Cobb was treasurer. Francis J. Mirabello was a trustee. Chekemma Fulmore-Townsend has worked as the president since July 2022. She previously led the Philadelphia Youth Network. ^{2  5  1}

Family members across generations participate in governance. Next-generation descendants, including Dorrance “Dory” Hamilton Benson, sit on the grants committee. The board maintains strong family control consistent with the Trust’s origins as a vehicle for the Hamilton family’s philanthropy. ^{2  5  1}

Financials

In 2024, the Hamilton Family Charitable Trust reported total revenues of $49,391,868. Contributions accounted for $38,449,639 (77.8 percent), while dividends contributed $7,202,327 (14.6 percent). The organization reported total expenses of $21,752,732, of which $19,790,537 (91.0 percent) consisted of charitable disbursements. Net assets at year-end stood at $232,133,298. ¹

The Trust has experienced substantial growth in assets since its formation in 2017, driven largely by ongoing family contributions and investment returns. Family contributions have historically represented the majority of annual revenue. Officer and trustee compensation has increased significantly over time. Compensation for the five primary family and outside trustees rose from $29,607 each in 2018 to $313,156 each in 2024. Some family trustees reported working only three hours per week while receiving these amounts. ¹

In 2022, the Trust received a large grant of approximately $8.95 million from the SVF Foundation, a related organization also founded by Dorrance Hill Hamilton. The transfer represented the balance of the SVF Foundation’s reserve account, donated back to the Hamilton family organization with certain restrictions as part of the SVF Foundation’s wind-down and divestment of assets. ^{6  1}
