Georgia Shift is a left-of-center voter turnout group that works to increase voter turnout among youth and communities of color in Georgia. 1 Georgia Shift is led by Jordan Johnson, a former staffer of Hillary For America, the New Leaders Council, and the Democratic Party. 2

Georgia Shift staff have connections to left-leaning groups such as the ACLU, 9to5, the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute, When We All Vote, and Democratic lawmakers. 3 4

Background

Georgia Shift was founded in 2015 by Ian Bridgeforth in Augusta, Georgia. 5 It first engaged in mass voter registration efforts in the 2018 midterm elections, sending 25,000 text messages and distributing 10,000 voting guides. 6 These efforts accelerated in the 2020 election cycle, though the group’s operations were modified during the COVID-19 pandemic. 7 By 2022, Georgia Shift had sent 584,711 texts, knocked on 64,723 doors, and interacted with 46,000 students. 8

While Georgia Shift is primarily based out of Augusta, it leverages connections in other regions of the state to tailor outreach to both local and regional needs. 9

Georgia Shift is affiliated with a lobbying organization, GS Action, also based out of Augusta. 10 It also coordinates youth voter outreach efforts with the left-of-center advocacy group Alliance For Youth Action. 11

Activity

Georgia Shift engages in advocacy, leadership development, and voter registration and education efforts. 12

Georgia Shift endorses left-of-center positions on various economic, social, and racial issues. 13 The organization seeks these policy changes through civic education and engagement targeted at young voters and communities of color. 14 15 In addition, Georgia Shift maintains programs for leadership development, including a year-long, paid fellowship that offers training opportunities and resources to community organizers and voting turnout advocates. 16

Georgia Shift offers information on how to register to vote and request absentee ballots, ballot drop locations, early voting locations, and policy traditional and social media as well as through door knocking and texting. 17

Georgia Shift maintains the Georgia Civic Campus Network, which provides voter guides and assistance to students on several college campuses in Georgia. 18 The group also recruited poll workers for the 2020 elections. 19 The Network coordinated efforts with administrators at the respective colleges to improve voter turnout amongst their students. 20

Georgia Shift produces a weekly livestream and video series, addressing voting procedure, current events, public policy, and providing personal anecdotes relating to those topics. 21
