Funders Together to End Homelessness is a left-of-center research group that advocates for increased welfare and housing programs for homeless populations. 1 2

The organization was initially created in 2004 as the “Partnership to End Long-Term Homelessness (PELTH)” through funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, Fannie Mae and the Fannie Mae Foundation, Melville Charitable Trust, Rockefeller Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Deutsche Bank. The group was incorporated as a formal nonprofit organization in 2010. 1

Background

Funders Together to End Homelessness has claimed to be the only “philanthropic membership organization” advocating for “housing justice” in the United States. In addition, the group advocates for ending homelessness through permanent housing policies as well as increased government welfare and housing programs. The group also claims that homelessness is caused by “historic and current structural racism” while alleging its own grantmaking strategies are informed through a “racial equity lens.” 1

Activities

Funders Together to End Homelessness’ “Policy Framework” has three “Pillars:” “Housing Abundance,” “Thriving Communities,” and “People Power.”  2

The “Housing Abundance”  pillar advocates for reorganizing the U.S housing system, as well as changing both the criminal justice and prison systems, by building taxpayer-funded homes through “government reparations.”  2

The “Thriving Communities” pillar advocates for the “decriminaliz[ation] of poverty” through the creation of left-of-center environmentalist programs and health care-related systems within U.S cities. 2

The “People Power” pillar advocates for increased “voter right protections” as well as “new liberatory and dignified systems.”  2

According to the organization, its “Policy Framework” is based on “racial justice” due to working “within a system that is rooted in structural racism and bias.”  2 It claims the Framework was inspired by A Way Home America’s (AWHA) New Deal to End Youth Homelessness, which in turn was influenced by a “transformative organizing framework” developed by Steve Williams, an activist who is affiliated with LeftRoots and the Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung. In addition, Funders Together claims to follow the lead of “national housing justice” organizations like Homes Guarantee and Alliance for Housing Justice. 2

In 2023, Funders Together allocated $1,215,301 to its “Housing First” pillar to advocate the construction of additional housing as well as increased welfare policies for the homeless population. It also allocated $561,870 for its “Workforce Matter Program” towards hiring consultants  to improve workforce development and education equity initiatives. 4
