Encounter for Culture and Education is a private foundation that supports the work of Encounter Books. Encounter Books publishes and distributes books that may otherwise go unpublished that aim to advance the ideals of liberty, a democratic society, and the cultural achievements of the West. 1

Background

Encounter Books was founded in 1998 by Peter Collier, in partnership with the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. The name Encounter Books was inspired by Encounter magazine, a liberal, anti-Soviet monthly literary journal founded by Stephen Spender and Irving Kristol in 1953. 2

Funding

Encounter for Culture and Education is funded by donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses. Encounter for Culture and Education discloses many of its major donors in its tax filings, with the largest donations in 2020 coming from the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation ($1 million), the Sarah Scaife Foundation ($160,000), and the Dian Graves Owen Foundation ($125,000). 3

Board of Directors

Roger Kimball is the president and publisher of Encounter Books and the editor and publisher of the New Criterion. Kimball sits on the board of the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, is the chair of the William F. Buckley Jr. Program at Yale University, and formerly sat on the board of the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. 4

Patrick English is the vice chair of the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation. 5

Shelby Steele is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution. Steele is the author of White Guilt: How Blacks and Whites Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era. 6

Lynette Zigman is the treasurer and secretary of the board. 7
