The Broadway League Foundation is the charitable arm of the Broadway League, the trade association for New York City’s live-theater industry. Originally known as the Celebrate Broadway Preservation Fund, the Broadway League Foundation was founded in 1993 as the charitable arm of the Broadway League, the trade association for New York City’s live-theater industry. In 2009, it created the Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (NHSMTA), an annual awards program that celebrates high school theater programs and provides scholarships to winners. 1
Founded in 2017, Broadway Bridges is a program of the Broadway League Foundation that was created in partnership with New York City Public Schools and United Federation of Teachers to coordinate field trips for students in all five boroughs to see Broadway shows. The program seeks to have all New York City Public Schools graduates see a Broadway show before graduating by coordinating field trips for tenth-grade students and offering $10 tickets to participating schools. 2
During the 2024/2025 school year, Broadway Bridges reported 27,090 student and chaperone program participants and over 150,000 participants since its creation. In 2024, Broadway Bridges introduced its Broadway Bridges on the Road initiative that offers reduced ticketing for students for national touring productions. 2
The Jimmy Awards, formally known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, were created in 2009 by the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and Nederlander Alliances of The Nederlander Organization. It is administered by the Broadway League Foundation. 3 In 2023, The Broadway League Foundation reported $1.4 million in total expenses associated with the Jimmy Awards and $1.6 million in revenue associated with the program. 4
The Jimmy Awards includes over 55 regional awards programs, covering over 2,300 high schools and 150,000 students. It is sponsored by touring Broadway productions and winners of regional competitions are invited to perform on Broadway at the annual event, where winners receive scholarships. 3
Sponsors of the Jimmy Awards include the Hard Rock Cafe New York, John Gore Organization, Thomas Schumacher, The Shubert Organization, Blumenthal Arts, Boston Women’s Fund, Disney Theatrical Group, Music Performance Trust Fund, Applebees, and Krispy Kreme Donuts. 5
The Broadway League Foundation has received funding from the New York State Department of Economic Development, Theatre Development Fund, New York City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Flagstar, the U.S. Postal Service, Federated Department Stores Foundation, Lehman Brothers, Time Warner, Bloomberg LP, and the Edith Meiser Foundation. 1
Thomas Schumacher is the president of the Broadway League Foundation, is the chairman of the board of directors for the Broadway League, and sits on the Tony Awards administration committee. He also worked as the chief creative officer of Disney Theatrical Group from 2002 before stepping down in September 2025. 6
In 2023, The Broadway League Foundation reported $2 million in total revenue, including $1.6 million from awards events and $142,000 from concert sponsorships. 7 It also reported $1.9 million in total expenses, including $422,062 in production costs, $167,500 on Broadway tickets, $145,524 on program management, and $86,240 on equipment rentals. 8
