The Blue Dog Coalition is a U.S. House of Representatives caucus for Democrats who oppose more liberal or socialist factions of the Democratic Party. The Blue Dog Action Fund is the 501(c)(4) advocacy arm of the coalition. The Blue Dog Coalition was founded following the 1994 mid-term election when the Republican Party gained 54 seats in the House of Representatives and eight seats in the Senate, a shift the coalition viewed as an indication that the Democratic Party had gone too far left. The coalition claims to focus its political agenda on fiscal restraint and political centrism. 6 It operates a political action committee (PAC) which donates funds to more moderate Democratic political candidates. 7
The Blue Dog Coalition’s legislative priorities have included campaign finance changes, pay-as-you-go budget policies, the “No Budget, No Pay” legislative movement, the effort to end openly partisan gerrymandering, efforts to balance the federal budget, initiatives to strengthen national security, and others. 8
