The Allstate Foundation is a private grantmaking foundation that is funded and operated by the insurance conglomerate Allstate Corporation.     History and Background

    The Allstate Foundation was formed in 1952, later receiving tax-exempt status in 1954. 3 According to its website, the Allstate Foundation claimed to have been one of the earliest corporate-tied foundations, and it initially focused its grantmaking on driver-training courses and community grants. 3

    By the 1980s, the Foundation began funding Neighborhood Housing Services to provide financial assistance to residents of low-income neighborhoods across the United States. 3

    Following Hurricane Katrina in 2004, Allstate Foundation created a Hurricane Recovery Fund, donating $1.2 million. 4 In total, the Foundation donated $6 million towards recovery efforts. 3

    Grantmaking

    Helping Hands Grants

    According to its tax filings, most grants from the Allstate Foundation are listed as “Helping Hands” grants. 2 The Foundation provides “Helping Hands” grants to nonprofit organizations and other groups where Allstate employees have volunteered for at least 25 hours at minimum. 5

    The Foundation has also donated grants towards organizations and other nonprofits focused on prevention of and recovery from domestic abuse. Between 2005 and 2025, the Foundation claims to have provided over $90 million in grants towards organizations with that focus. 6 Specific nonprofit areas include educational programs, sponsoring direct assistance to domestic violence survivors, and donations to other nonprofits focused on domestic violence prevention. 7

    Left-of-Center Activities

    The Allstate Foundation has previously provided a series of grants to nonprofits and other organizations that promote left-of-center policy towards the economy, education, environmentalism, healthcare, and media. This includes over $500,000 to the Democracy Collaborative Foundation in 2024, 2 roughly $750,000 across several multi-year grants to the Facing History and Ourselves, 2 over $1 million to the left-of-center PolicyLink, 2 and $200,000 to the New Leaders Council (NLC). 2

    Racial Equity Grants

    The Foundation operates a “Racial Equity” grant program of $25,000. In 2024, this grant was given to 20 organizations including the Southern Poverty Law Center, Prosperity Now, the New Mexico Immigrant Law Center, and the Anti-Recidivism Coalition. 2

    Aside from the Racial Equity grant, the Foundation donated to other social justice-focused organizations, including a $1 million grant to the NAACP in 2024 for race-based programming and initiatives. 2 In addition to Racial Equity grants, other nonprofits that received over $1 million grants each in 2024 included the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development, New Profit, and UnidosUS. 2

    Community Funding Grants

    In 2024, LGBT community advocacy organizations Los Angeles LGBT Center and Rainbow Project received grants from the Allstate Foundation, totaling $255,000 and $19,120 respectively.  2
