The Alaska Center Education Fund (ACEF) is the 501(c)(3) arm of the Alaska Center, an environmental advocacy group.

Background

According to its tax records, the Alaska Center Education Fund was formed in 1971. 1 It is the fundraising arm to the Alaska Center, a 501(c)(4) environmental advocacy group. 2

ACEF has three programs: Trailside Discovery Camp, Youth Organization, and Voter Education. The first is a summer camp program that offers environmental education to children between the ages of four to sixteen years. 3 The second is a summit and program that educates youth on environmental activism in Alaska. 4 The third focuses on providing information on upcoming candidates in state elections. 5

Funding

ACEF has received grants from Common Stream, the Lazar Foundation, the True North Foundation, and the Alaska Community Foundation. Common Stream Inc. gave $90,000 in 2016-2017, the Lazar Foundation gave $20,000 in 2016, the True North Foundation gave $20,000 in 2016, and the Alaska Community Foundation gave $10,774 in 2016. 6

Leadership

Polly Carr is the executive director of both the Alaska Center and ACEF. 7 She previously served as rural deputy director for the 2008 Mark Begich Senate campaign and as a program officer for the Alaska Conservation Foundation from 2009 to 2013. 8 She also concurrently serves for the Municipality of Anchorage Climate Action Plan’s Advisory Committee. 9

Board of Directors

Ann Rappaport is the board chair of ACEF. She previously served as conservation director at The Nature Conservancy, a moderate environmentalist funder. 10

Key Getty is a board member of ACEF and is the Alaska Center’s board treasurer. 11 She also serves on the boards for Bridge Builders of Anchorage and the National Unification Advisory Council. 12
