Background

According to its tax records, the Alaska Center Education Fund was formed in 1971. [1] It is the fundraising arm to the Alaska Center, a 501(c)(4) environmental advocacy group. [2]

ACEF has three programs: Trailside Discovery Camp, Youth Organization, and Voter Education. The first is a summer camp program that offers environmental education to children between the ages of four to sixteen years. [3] The second is a summit and program that educates youth on environmental activism in Alaska. [4] The third focuses on providing information on upcoming candidates in state elections. [5]

Funding

ACEF has received grants from Common Stream, the Lazar Foundation, the True North Foundation, and the Alaska Community Foundation. Common Stream Inc. gave $90,000 in 2016-2017, the Lazar Foundation gave $20,000 in 2016, the True North Foundation gave $20,000 in 2016, and the Alaska Community Foundation gave $10,774 in 2016. [6]

Leadership

Polly Carr is the executive director of both the Alaska Center and ACEF. [7] She previously served as rural deputy director for the 2008 Mark Begich Senate campaign and as a program officer for the Alaska Conservation Foundation from 2009 to 2013. [8] She also concurrently serves for the Municipality of Anchorage Climate Action Plan’s Advisory Committee. [9]

Board of Directors

Ann Rappaport is the board chair of ACEF. She previously served as conservation director at The Nature Conservancy, a moderate environmentalist funder. [10]

Key Getty is a board member of ACEF and is the Alaska Center’s board treasurer. [11] She also serves on the boards for Bridge Builders of Anchorage and the National Unification Advisory Council. [12]
