In response to the high levels of solid waste, untreated wastewater, and agricultural pollution in the Motagua River, Asociacion Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente's (AIDA) goal is to build and implement a successful legal strategy in Guatemala through coalition-building, strategic litigation, and communications outreach to ensure an effective management and sanitation plan for the river. The legal strategy will include actions at local, state, and international levels seeking the government’s commitment to implement actions to reduce pollution from wastewater and improve the water quality of the river.

Asociación Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente (AIDA) will work towards improved water quality in the Mesoamerican Reef by building and implementing a successful strategy to ensure the Guatemalan government’s commitment to implement an effective management plan for the Motagua River. AIDA will collaborate with national and international partners to draft and implement a strategic litigation plan, which will contribute to and enable the assessment of the options for legal interventions and provide support for coalition-building, and will craft a communications outreach campaign to support the legal efforts.
