The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1107 is an affiliate of the controversial SEIU labor union, claiming to represent more than 9,000 workers in Nevada. SEIU Local 1107 represents hospital, and public service employees. [1]

SEIU Local 1107 actively pushes for left-of-center economic policy in Nevada, organizing members to support hiking the minimum wage, strengthening collective bargaining, [2] and creating more regulations in Nevada’s health care industry. [3]

SEIU Local 1107’s Executive Director, Grace Vergara-Mactal, has been vocal about the union’s support of the far-left Medicare-for-All movement that would institute government-controlled health systems. [4]

SEIU Local 1107 actively endorses Democratic candidates for local, state, and federal offices, and gives members advice on how to vote on ballot questions. [5]

Political Activity

SEIU Local 1107 created a campaign in 2019 called “We Will Rise,” asking members to sign its pledge that supports a hike in the minimum wage and increasing union privileges related to collective bargaining. [6] In previous years, SEIU Local 1107 has participated in organized events in support of the Fight for $15 campaign led by its national parent union. [7]

As a representative of healthcare workers, SEIU Local 1107 partnered with National Nurses United in a campaign to push legislation for the creation of a Nevada OSHA, in order to create even more regulations in the Nevada health care industry. [8]

Unlike fellow Nevada labor union, Culinary Workers Union Local 226, SEIU Local 1107’s Executive Director, Grace Vergara-Mactal, has been outspoken about Local 1107’s support of the far-left Medicare-for-All plan for a government-run health care system. [9]

SEIU Local 1107 actively endorses Democratic candidates for local, state, and federal offices. SEIU Local 1107 also gives members the “answers” to ballot questions, often without further explanation. [10]

Trusteeship Controversy

In April 2017, SEIU international president Mary Kay Henry brought emergency trusteeship and removal of the top two union officers to Service Employees International Union Local 1107 in Nevada because of alleged “infighting” between the president and the executive vice president. The ousted local president, Cherie Mancini, filed a lawsuit to reverse the decision. “This is a power grab by the international (union),” said Mancini’s attorney. “SEIU comes in and imposes a trusteeship and puts in place the government they want.” [11]

People and Funding

SEIU Local 1107 reported 9,714 members in its 2019 filing with the Department of Labor. SEIU Local 1107 collects monthly dues from in members ranging from $29 to $47.08, and reported collecting a total of $4,173,292 in 2019. [12]
