Background
Earth Advocacy, also referred to as the Earth Advocacy Project, is a California consulting firm that works for nonprofit environmental organizations and foundations. 1 2 It also represents organizations in the California state legislature and helps foundations with strategy and policy. 1 2
California environmental lawyer Kim Delfino is the founder of the organization and as of 2025 was its president. 2
Earth Advocacy characterizes itself as “nature’s PR agency,” and says its goal is to move environmental issues to the front of the public’s awareness. The firm says it wants the public to deal openly and urgently with environmental issues. 2
The organization says it will appeal to people’s hearts and minds “by providing clear and simple steps that can be taken to reduce one’s impact on the environment.” 2
Leadership
Kim Delfino is the founder of Earth Advocacy and was its president as of 2025. 3 She is an environmental attorney and consultant and provides policy and advocacy expertise to nonprofits and foundations about protecting lands, water, and wildlife. 4 Before she started Earth Advocacy, Delfino was the California program director for Defenders of Wildlife for two decades. 3 Before that, she was the director of the California Public Interest Research Group. 4 5
She was formerly a member of the California Water Commission from 2010 to 2015. She has also been a former or current board member of the Golden State Salmon Association, the Water Education Foundation, Sustainable Conservation, and the American Bar Association Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources Trends. 3
As president of Earth Advocacy, Delfino has frequently given testimony to committees of the California state legislature regarding environmental legislation. 6
Advocacy
2024 Proposition 4
In 2024, Kim Delfino and Earth Advocacy campaigned to get a $10 billion climate bond placed on the November ballot in California known as Proposition 4. The measure would fund projects to protect the water supply, increase wildfire resilience, and protect the coast from sea level rise. 4
Earth Advocacy led the Yes on 4 coalition-building for the 2024 ballot measure. 7 Earth Advocacy represented a coalition of hundreds of environmental groups, firefighters, labor groups, and agricultural organizations to back Proposition 4. 8
In promoting the ballot measure, Delfino said, “If we don’t do preventive care, then we’re going to get sick and we’re going to have to pay way more on the back end.“ 9
The measure was approved with 59 percent of voters backing it. 10
Energy Policy
Delfino has cited as among her proudest accomplishments advocating for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management’s Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan that set aside 388,000 acres of public land in the California desert for potential solar, wind, and geothermal energy development. She also cited helping to preserve 4.4 million acres of roadless forest lands in California, as well as supporting the effort to phase out lead ammunition in hunting in the state. 4
When the California Energy Commission considered advancing offshore wind energy in 2022, Earth Advocacy called for keeping current goals in place, arguing studies used as the basis for raising the goals did not adequately consider social and environmental concerns. 11
